Dermot Gallagher reacts to contentious West Ham United v Crystal Palace incident

Konstantinos Mavropanos can have “no complaints” over his second yellow card in the Premier League clash between West Ham United and Crystal Palace on Saturday, Dermot Gallagher has said.

The centre-back was trying to hold off an attacking run from Jean Philippe-Mateta, which resulted in him kicking the Frenchman in the head instead of the ball, resulting in a second yellow card.

Former Premier League referee Gallagher was speaking on Sky Sports News’ Ref Watch (20 January, 11:49am) and shared his thoughts on the decision that was made about the Greek international.

“I don’t think he can have any complaints. His reaction tells you he knew it. It wasn’t the wisest thing to do when already on a yellow card,” he said.

West Ham United and Graham Potter need some new defenders soon

At the moment, Graham Potter is still settling into his new role at the London Stadium.

The Englishman took over from Julen Lopetegui a little while ago now and although he may have beaten Fulham, the West Ham of old showed up against Palace at the weekend.

The former Chelsea boss tried to change the team back to his favoured three-at-the-back formation, but due to the lack of depth and talent among the Hammers’ defensive ranks, things didn’t quite go to plan.

They were defeated 2-0 with fans questioning why Potter was brought in if he’s going to do the same, or something just slightly different, to the style of play the Spaniard lined up with at the London Stadium.

While it’s unknown whether the Hammers will make any additions in January, the fact that very few defenders have been linked with a London Stadium switch feels quite telling.

Granted, they’re in dire need of attacking reinforcement, particularly in the number nine role but, on paper, their defensive ranks also look rather weak.

In other West Ham news, Graham Potter has learnt when he can expect Jarrod Bowen to be back in contention.
