Declan Rice reacts as Gianluca Scamacca confirms West Ham United exit

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice has reacted as Italian striker Gianluca Scamacca has confirmed his exit from West Ham.

The striker has joined Serie A club Atalanta on a permanent transfer, as confirmed by the official West Ham website (7 August).

The forward joined the Hammers from Sassuolo last summer, scoring eight goals from his 27 appearances for the club.

Sharing a farewell message to West Ham, Scamacca posted on Instagram: “Thank you for everything Hammers.

“We lived a short journey together but I’m very grateful for the moments we spent and to experience winning a European trophy for the incredible supporters of this club. I wish everyone at the club all the success for the future. Now for a new adventure.”

His former Hammers teammate Rice, who left the London Stadium earlier this summer, liked the post.

Short stay

It really was a short stay in East London for Scamacca, who failed to hit the heights expected of him in claret and blue.

The same can be said for fellow forward Danny Ings, but the former Burnley and Aston Villa man looks set to stick around and try his luck once again next season.

Scamacca has instead decided to return to Italy and to Serie A in a bid to get his career back on track, which he will need to do as soon as possible if he wants to be in with a shout for a place in the Italian national team for Euro 2024, if they make it of course.

Injuries certainly played their part during his short Hammers stint, and he really could have lived up to expectation had he been fully fit, but sadly now fans of the club will never know what could have been.

In other West Ham news, the winner has been named in the Hammers, Tottenham and Monaco race to sign one Premier League defender.
