Declan Rice leads West Ham United huddle for first time this season, makes gesture to fans away at Leeds

West Ham skipper Declan Rice called for a team huddle before the kick-off against Leeds United, as reported by journalist Roshane Thomas.

The Atheltic journalist wrote on Twitter (4 January) that Rice then pointed towards the away fans, something the Hammers did for the first time this season.

The Hammers avoided their sixth consecutive defeat in the Premier League after they picked up a 2-2 draw against the Whites at Elland Road on Wednesday (4 January).

“Declan Rice called for a team huddle before kick off, then pointed towards the away fans. First time I’ve seen the team do that this season,” wrote Thomas on Twitter.

Too late?

For the first time in many months, the Hammers played really well, and David Moyes should be really happy with the point.

In fact, both sides got opportunities to win the match. On another day, Michail Antonio could have won the game for the Hammers, after he couldn’t meet the ball from Said Benrahma.

Despite going a goal down, the Hammers kept on making attacking moves, and they were rewarded right at the stroke of half-time, as they earned a penalty when Gianluca Scamacca was brought down by Pascal Struijk.

Lucas Paqueta, who looked sharp throughout the game, equalized for the Hammers, while Scamacca added another in the second half.

The team spirit was lacking for a while and it felt like Moyes is struggling to get the best out of his players. Rice, once again, was superb on the pitch and he showed his leadership skills here, trying to re-forge the team spirit that was missing.
