Dean Ashton flummoxed by what happened in West Ham v Wolves live on Sky Sports

Former West Ham striker Dean Ashton was left flummoxed as to how Wolves goalkeeper Dan Bentley did not do more to keep out the Hammers’ opener in Sunday’s (17 December) Premier League clash.

Mohammed Kudus was on target twice in the first half at the London Stadium, the first of which saw him shoot through the legs of a defender, though Bentley might feel like he could have done better.

Ashton, speaking as a pundit for Sky Sports Soccer Sunday, certainly felt so.

“(Lucas Paqueta) releases kudus down the left-hand side, he drives at the defender, cuts inside on his left foot and as we see so often the defender’s gone to block it, it’s gone right between the defender’s legs, which can be the only reason why I think that Bentley doesn’t do better with this,” he said.

“He must be unsighted because it’s not in the corner, it’s quite near the middle of goal but it just flashes past him because of the pace and maybe being unsighted.”

West Ham went on to win the game 3-0 at the London Stadium.

West Ham won’t care

Only a week ago, there were question marks over the future of manager David Moyes after a humbling 5-0 defeat to London rivals Fulham in the Premier League, a loss that no one really saw coming.

They rebounded with a 2-0 victory over Freiburg to finish top of their Europa League group, though, and Kudus, Moyes, and the Hammers’ faithful will not care one jot whether Bentley was unsighted or just made an error.

It is also a great sign to see Kudus among the goals. With Michail Antonio injured, Danny Ings out of form and out of favour, the onus has been on Jarrod Bowen and Kudus to provide the goal threat.

Wolves represented a tricky task on paper, so for West Ham to pass this test was a welcome boost especially with a Carabao Cup quarter-final preceding an extremely busy Christmas period where the games will come thick and fast.

In other West Ham news, another Sky pundit gushed over footage of Lucas Paqueta versus Wolves.
