David Sullivan told to step down as West Ham United chief after Chelsea humiliation

Tony Cottee believes it is time for the West Ham board – and manager David Moyes – to step aside following Sunday’s (5 May) loss to Chelsea.

The Irons were on the end of yet another humiliating defeat as they went down 5-0 to London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

United have been in poor form in 2024 and are on the lookout for a new manager, despite Moyes suggesting he is still in charge of his own future.

The heavy loss at Chelsea was the final straw for former United player Cottee, who launched a rant on his personal X account [5 May].

“Absolute joke of a Board!! Hung out to dry our 3rd best Manager ever, publicly courting and talking to other Managers (who aren’t as good as Moyesy imo), is really poor and classless,” he said.

“It now seems obvious that it’s time to change Manager but there are ways of doing it. Pls Make an announcement and give the Manager the send off he deserves against Luton …

“Yes, the team was awful today but the worst thing at a FC is uncertainty and the Board are fully complicit in creating that since we won the Cup !

“The circus is fully back in town and 14 years is far too long, a change is needed at the top! I’ve had enough……!!! Our loyal fans deserve so much better.”

David Moyes decision must be made now at West Ham

It was clear weeks ago – months ago, even – that a decision needed to be made over Moyes’ future. What good is this mess doing anyone?

The Scotsman has clearly lost the dressing room and needs to come out and confirm he is leaving London Stadium this summer.

Moyes is still respected by supporters, even if it does not look that way on the back of this latest loss, but that is diminishing by the week.

Fans want to be able to say thank you to Moyes, but that is not going to happen at this rate as he is adamant he will wait until after the final game of the season to make a decision on his future.

All the while, West Ham are continuing to hold talks with candidates to succeed Moyes, knowing full well he is not going to still be in the dugout.

Calling for the board to step down sounds extreme, and hopefully this mess will all be cleared up before long. Right now, the sooner the season ends the better.
