David Sullivan takes backseat regarding West Ham transfers – report

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has taken a backseat role with transfers at the club since the return of David Moyes.

According to a report in the Evening Standard, the boss has taken a firm handling on all arrivals and departures at the London Stadium. Sullivan is notorious for being in the thick of all transfers at West Ham, which has led to many falling through or the wrong type of player signing.

The report also suggests that the relationship between owner and manager is better than ever before. This is despite the fact that the board let Moyes walk after keeping us in the top-flight the first time. At the time, he stated the club would go in search of a ‘high calibre’ manager to lead us forward.

The Hammers are flying this season, currently sat fifth in the Premier League on 42 points having played 24 matches. The transfer business is definitely a big factor in all of this seasons success.

The ins and outs

Since January 2020, the Hammers have had a lot of players enter and exit the club.

Roughly £170million was spent on players who failed to improve the XI. Sebastian Haller, Felipe Anderson, Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez just to name a few. Two of those mentioned were club-record signings, all of which have been moved on.

They’re labelled as ‘Pellegrini signings’. Moyes on the other hand has invested excellently in the club. He identified that we needed more legs in the middle, and signed Tomas Soucek from the Czech league. He and Jarrod Bowen both played pivotal roles in keeping our Premier League status.

The summer market saw the arrivals of Vladimir Coufal, Said Benrahma and Craig Dawson. All of the players mentioned above are starters in Moyes’ XI, it’s hard to imagine what our team looked like without them! Add to that Jesse Lingard’s loan arrival in January 2021, and you have a fantastic crop of players driving us towards Europe.

Sullivan must have taken a back seat. His track record since 2010 is woeful at best, just look at what Moyes has constructed in 14 months.

It’s a step in the right direction from the club to get him away from any business sin the transfer market, and long overdue.
