David Sullivan should ‘be applauded’ after new West Ham United transfer developments

West Ham United chief David Sullivan should “be applauded” for his investment under Julen Lopetegui ahead of the transfer deadline, according to Troy Deeney.

The Hammers have been busy in the transfer window, with the likes of Niclas Fullkrug, Guido Rodriguez, Max Kilman, Crysencio Summerville and Luis Guilherme all arriving in East London ahead of the new season.

While Sullivan has been a contentious figure among the Hammers supporters over the last couple of seasons, talkSPORT pundit Deeney believes he deserves more credit for his work.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Tuesday (6 August, 10:29) he said: “The owner should always be applauded for it.

“I love West Ham, I love old English football teams and I think West Ham are brilliant. I think when you look at West Ham, it’s about what are they.

“They were really high achievers under David Moyes, he did a fantastic job but they were a counter-attacking team who defended first and the fans didn’t want that.”

Are West Ham United close to any new signings in the summer transfer window?

While Sullivan has certainly backed his new manager this summer, that should arguably be the expectation of a football club owner when they decide to make a change in the dugout at the end of a campaign.

Lopetegui was always going to want to put his stamp on the squad in his first summer in charge and the Hammers were always going to have money to spend because of their outgoing business over the last few transfer windows.

While some may view Sullivan’s actions as the bare minimum, it is easy to forget that there are numerous football club owners up and down the country who wouldn’t have spent this heavily even after sacking a manager and selling Declan Rice.

Hopefully, the money invested by Sullivan won’t have been put to waste and Lopetegui’s side will get off to a good start in the Premier League as this side is more than capable of challenging for the European places again this season.
