David Sullivan set to earn West Ham United tens of millions in coming summer – report

David Sullivan is set to earn West Ham United “tens of millions” in the upcoming summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reported in their print edition (05 February) that the Irons’ co-owner insists on giving the club the option to extend each players’ contract by 12 months in each deal.

It is suggested that with Declan Rice having that clause, he effectively has three years left on his contract ahead of an anticipated bidding war in the summer.

Premier League clubs at the very top are said to be preparing big bids to test the patience of the Irons regarding Rice.

The star midfielder is courted by Manchester United and Chelsea, and the Hammers are well placed to demand huge money.

That huge sum is said to be above £100million for any interested clubs once the Premier League season is over in spring.

Smart.

This all sounds well and good, but we’d all much prefer another scenario.

Would we welcome the tens of millions that Sullivan is set to earn for the club, or would we just want Rice to stay? The answer is very clear.

Given our failure to sign anyone in January, it isn’t a guarantee that the money would be instantly pumped back into the club to bring in a replacement.

We have been down this road many times before, so we certainly would urge everyone to approach with caution when it comes to this one.

As mentioned, Rice has years left on his deal so there is no rush unless he pushes to leave, so why not strengthen around him and make a real push for the Champions League? We’ve got this close without real investment beyond those around us.
