David Moyes will make decision on Conor Coventry future close to Aug 31

David Moyes is expected to make a decision on Conor Coventry’s West Ham future for next season closer to deadline day, claims ExWHUEmployee.

The midfielder has been impressing in the Hammers’ pre-season campaign and there’s still a decision to be made whether or not the club will be loaning him out this summer.

In one of his previous posts, the reliable Hammers insider stated that a number of Championship clubs were keen on signing Coventry, with Hull City being among them.

West Ham

League One sides Coventry City and Rotherham United also want to sign the 21-year-old on loan.

In his most recent post on the Patreon page for The West Ham Way Podcast, he wrote, “Conor Coventry’s future is still up in the air. The manager likes him but also has said he can’t guarantee him regular games which after last year he definitely needs.

“A decision is expected to be made closer to deadline day but it will purely come down to what David Moyes sees as best.”

Must keep him

This should not be a matter of debate. We’re short on numbers in the midfield, Coventry has done well playing for the first team in pre-season and it seems obvious that he’s ready to make the step up.

West Ham

If playing time was an issue and were he to be getting it at another Premier League side or a club in one of Europe’s top five leagues then one can understand why we would let him leave on loan.

However, all the interest is coming from Championship and League One sides, which is certainly not the level he should be playing at.

Instead, he can serve as a backup option to the likes of Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek and start the cup and odd Premier League games to build up confidence and get minutes of senior first-team football under his belt.

Loaning him out should only be considered if there’s another midfielder set to be signed from now until the end of the transfer window, which seems very unlikely, given how we go about our transfer business.
