David Moyes turned down offers to sign new left-back this summer

West Ham did not sign a new left-back this summer as David Moyes reportedly turned down all the players that were offered to him.

According to Claret & Hugh, the Hammers boss wants to keep on Arthur Masuaku as cover to Aaron Cresswell.

Youngster Ben Johnson, who is a right-back by trade, can also play at left-back when called upon.

Right strategy?

Having an injury-prone player and someone playing out of position as their second and third choices may not be the best choice ever.

Cresswell himself is already 31 and past his best. There are no assurances that he will go through this season without suffering an injury that will keep him out for a considerable amount of time.

While there was a cash crunch at the London Stadium this summer, signing someone on loan as they did with Alex Kral and Alphonse Areola, would not have been a bad idea at all.

There are squad places and it’s good to have good strength in depth especially if they’re going to be competing in Europe as well.

Moyes may have taken a gamble relying on Masuaku and Johnson, and it remains to be seen whether it pays off over the course of the season.

So far, it’s not affected the Hammers, but once the games come thick and fast, it will be a real test for their squad depth.
