David Moyes tipped to take over as Republic of Ireland manager after West Ham United exit

Tony Cascarino has tipped David Moyes to take over as the manager of the Republic of Ireland following his West Ham United exit.

The Scotsman managed his final game at the London Stadium as the Hammers ran out 3-1 winners over Luton Town on Sunday (12 May) after it was announced he wouldn’t have his contract renewed beyond the end of the season.

Julen Lopetegui appears to be the frontrunner to replace the 61-year-old in East London and while Moyes has not made his plans clear, talkSPORT pundit Cascarino has tipped him to become Ireland’s boss.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Sunday (12 May, 6:36) he said: “I would take him tomorrow, absolutely I’d take David Moyes for the Republic of Ireland.

“He’s the age for International football, I think that time away and being part of trying to Ireland to the World Cup in the United States, I would love someone like David Moyes. He’s earned a lot of money in his career, the Ireland job won’t pay anywhere near what West Ham will have paid but it’s an exciting project.

“If we could tempt him and if he was bold enough to do something with the Republic of Ireland because we need somebody desperately to change the direction we’re going in.

“I feel it’s ready for that type of manager to come in.”

What will David Moyes do after he leaves West Ham United and the London Stadium?

He may not have been every supporter’s cup of tea in recent months, but every West Ham fan will be eagerly watching Moyes’ next steps following the end of the season to see where he next ends up managing.

His work at the London Stadium has ensured that he will not be out of work for too long as he is far too good a manager to be without a job. The question will be, what does he want to do next in his career?

International management does tend to be the next step for a manager around Moyes’ age but he may not want to take that step. Ultimately, it is a completely different role to that of a club manager who is on the grass every day.

For Ireland, he would be an excellent appointment and he could well help them reach the World Cup in 2026, but there are so many potential stumbling blocks that could stop such an appointment from being made.
