David Moyes: This is why West Ham failed to sign new striker in January

David Moyes has addressed West Ham United and their failure to sign a striker in the recent January transfer window.

Michail Antonio is the only senior forward at the London Stadium after Sebastien Haller was sold to join Ajax at the start of last month.

Plenty were linked with the Hammers, but the deadline passed with no action, despite it being shared that money was available.

Speaking to the BBC, Moyes admitted that he didn’t want the Irons to make the same mistakes by splashing the cash on someone that wouldn’t work out.

“We were looking and we had money to spend,” he said.

“But we are trying not to go down the same path as before. I am not going to sign players who have come in to appease people.

“We do want to add to what we have and we tried for a striker, but the players we wanted weren’t available.”

Antonio now has the pressure of the world on his shoulders.

Having just come back from yet another hamstring injury, Moyes has been forced to play his striker more than usually expected.

The 30-year-old has started the past four Premier League games, despite struggling against both Liverpool and Crystal Palace.

Looking at other options, Jesse Lingard and Andriy Yarmolenko could both be asked to play a centre-forward role if needed.

Outside of that, Ademipo Odubeko could be handed the chance to prove himself in the Premier League, although with European football possible this season, last month was massively disappointing.
