David Moyes speaks out as another West Ham staff member leaves

David Moyes paid tribute to the “highly ambitious” Paul Nevin after it was confirmed he will depart his role at West Ham.

Nevin served first as first team coach then as assistant coach under Moyes, and the Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg reports he is set to join Patrick Vieira’s backroom team at Ligue 1 side Strasbourg.

He has previously worked in Australia, New Zealand, China, Brazil and Qatar, and returned to the England set-up with Gareth Southgate in 2021.

West Ham confirmed the news on their official website, and Moyes said: “Paul has played an important role for us during his time here and I would like to thank him for all his support and hard work during his time at West Ham.

“He is highly ambitious as a coach and is keen to test himself in a new environment and we wish him well in doing so.”

Nevin added: “I’ll always look back on my time and the opportunity I had to work at West Ham with great fondness.

“In the three and a half years, we enjoyed a period of great success in West Ham’s history, culminating in the Europa Conference League win last season, which gives the club a fantastic opportunity and platform to go on to even greater levels in the future.”

A blow for Moyes

Nevin is a highly thought of and highly respected coach and his departure comes hot on the heels of Mark Warburton also leaving his role in Moyes’ coaching team.

The upshot is Moyes is a couple of bodies down with pre-season preparations ramping up, and he will no doubt be keen to beef up his coaching staff before the new season clicks fully into gear.

Rob Newman is reportedly also close to leaving as head of recruitment (ExWHUemployee, 4 July) following the arrival of Tim Steidten as technical director, so there has been plenty of change behind the scenes at West Ham.

Of course, for Moyes there is also the issue of needing to flesh out his squad ahead of a new campaign that will once again include European football, this time in the form of the Europa League.

Captain Declan Rice will need replacing once his move to Arsenal gets ratified, while the likely departure of Gianluca Scamacca means at least one new forward will need to signed.
