David Moyes shares honest Julen Lopetegui sack verdict at West Ham United

David Moyes believes Julen Lopetegui should be given more time as the West Ham United manager despite a poor start to his tenure.

The Hammers are currently 14th in the Premier League after their latest horror show, a 3-0 loss at Nottingham Forest at the weekend, and have just six points between themselves and the relegation zone.

Speaking on the Football Daily Podcast (3 November), Moyes shared why he thinks Lopetegui needs more time as the Hammers boss.

“First of all, I’ve had a few defeats and have lost quite heavily a few different times as well so it happens for all managers,” Moyes said.

“I think the new manager coming in needs time and needs to be given that time and opportunity to set things to the way he wants them to happen.

“They look as though they’re a bit more open than they’ve been before and more liable possibly to concede but they’re desperately trying to score more goals as well.

“The players there must be a lot fresher, bigger energy, showing that but I just think the manager needs to be given that opportunity and a bit of time to settle things down.

“Sometimes players need to perform as well and step up, I’m sure a few of them could play better and show the manager what they can do.”

It’s fairly evident that the Hammers haven’t been at their best this season.

Many fans expected their team to be battling for the European places once again, especially after their summer transfer window saw several players arrive to bolster their ranks.

While some such as Max Kilman and Crysencio Summerville have hit the ground running and improved West Ham’s team, a lot more could still come from the squad.

Indeed, one of West Ham’s marquee signings, Niclas Fullkrug, hasn’t been able to started a league game for the team just yet due to an injury he suffered near the start of the season but, even with this in mind, the introduction of one player can’t change the entire dynamic of a team.

There’s still time left in the season for Lopetegui to turn things around of course, but the longer this takes, the less of a grip the Spaniard will likely have on his job, especially if he keeps losing every other game.

In other West Ham news, Julen Lopetegui may choose to give Lewis Orford a run in the team after what Edson Alvarez did.
