David Moyes shares ‘brilliant’ West Ham United transfer verdict following Brighton draw

David Moyes said West Ham United will try to keep building during the January transfer window, but has conceded that January is not a “brilliant” window.

The Hammers extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to four matches with a 0-0 draw against Brighton on Tuesday (2 January) to remain three points ahead of the Seagulls, sitting comfortably in sixth place.

Following the final whistle, Moyes confirmed that the Irons wouldn’t have too much money to spend during the January window, but did admit that the Hammers will do what they can to sign the right players should they be available.

As quoted by Caught Offside (3 January) he said: “We won’t have much money to spend. It might depend on what the outgoings are. Everyone knows we could do with going again, how do we do that? I’m not saying we won’t if the right things can be got, but it’s not a brilliant window – quite quick, not a great deal of availability.

“We brought in Bowen and Soucek in January, so it’s not to say we couldn’t find a couple of players then. But we were at a different level then to what we are now, so the players who are going to be good enough to go straight into the team, would probably cost a lot of money.

“We want to keep building, and if the right ones become available, we’ll try to do it.”

Try to do it

West Ham supporters may seem slightly concerned by their manager’s suggestion that the Hammers won’t have much money to spend during the transfer window, but it seems like the Irons could still be active if the right deal becomes available.

As Moyes suggested, previous windows allowed the Hammers to sign the likes of Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek. That pair weren’t the most expensive additions, but they did make a huge difference and that could be what’s coming at the London Stadium.

Not every signing is going to be the £30million-plus deal that saw Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez arrive in East London during the summer. Instead, there could be some slightly cheaper arrivals from lower leagues that may come as a slight surprise.

West Ham supporters shouldn’t be expecting a winter overhaul, but they would be naive to assume no additions will be made before the end of the month.
