David Moyes set for West Ham United exit as farewell tour turns into disaster

David Moyes is heading for the exit after his farewell tour took another “disastrous” turn as West Ham lost 5-0 to Chelsea on Sunday (5 May), Kieran Gill has said.

According to The Guardian [3 May], the Hammers are nearing a deal to replace Moyes with Julen Lopetegui, an appointment that could be announced as early as this week.

With just one home game of the Premier League season remaining, welcoming Luton Town to the London Stadium, West Ham suffered another disappointing loss at Stamford Bridge on Sunday (5 May).

Writing for Daily Mail’s The Verdict on Monday (6 May, page 7), Gill said: “With Moyes set to depart West Ham this summer, one fan in the away end sacrificed a bedsheet to show his appreciation.

“‘Moysie,’ read the banner. ‘Thank you. Three years in Europe. Champions’ Though this is turning into a disastrous farewell tour, you hope that appreciation will be replicated in their last home game at the London Stadium against Luton this Saturday.”

David Moyes now set for quick West Ham United exit

The Scot has the perfect opportunity to finish his second tenure at the club on a high, as West Ham near a deal to replace him as manager.

The Hammers have experienced some wonderful memories in recent seasons, all thanks to the leadership and guidance of Moyes, leading the club to their first European trophy in decades.

Despite this, the current manager can only bask in that glory for so long. Football is a results-based sport and performances have been so disappointing in the Premier League and domestic competitions.

The 5-0 loss to Chelsea is just the tip of the iceberg, especially after the recent 5-2 defeat to Crystal Palace last month. However, with nothing left to play for, Hammers fans can turn the penultimate game of the season into a farewell party.

Even considering the sour end, with Moyes seemingly falling out with Tim Steidten, the manager deserves that respect when West Ham face Luton at the London Stadium on Saturday 11 May.
