David Moyes sack decision emerges at West Ham United after 6-0 Arsenal defeat at London Stadium

David Moyes is in “no danger” of getting the sack at West Ham before the end of the season despite pressure mounting on him, according to Sean Whetstone.

The 6 Foot 2 editor wrote on Twitter on 12 February that the Scot now has a set number of games to prove to the London Stadium hierarchy that he deserves the new contract that had been expected as the “can is being kicked down the road” on his future.

After Arsenal won 6-0 in Stratford at the weekend Moyes is facing renewed calls to go [talkSPORT, 12 February], with his current deal set to expire in the summer.

But Whetstone wrote: “David Moyes is in no danger of the sack this season but the ‘Jury is out’ on his new contract with the manager having a set number of games to prove to the board that he is the man to take the club forward.

“Ultimately the can is being kicked down the road with a final decision made closer to the end of the season.”

West Ham to remain in Moyes limbo for the season

Moyes is said to feel under-appreciated for his work at the London Stadium [Daily Mail, 12 February], and while the increasing suggestion around the matter is that the supporters are ungrateful for the success he has brought there is relatively little focus on the role of the board.

Letting any manager get within six months of the end of his contract leaves him looking like a lame duck, let alone one who was on the brink of getting the sack within the past year.

The Europa Conference League trophy was a major achievement yet at times it feels like it got in the way of an intended succession plan as the hierarchy felt they could move out the man who had lifted it.

Whether Moyes should stay on the basis of rescuing a relegation-threatened side and bringing regular European football and silverware, or whether he should go off the back of a dismal style of football, poor form and a suspicion that he doesn’t get the best out of the team’s stars, will depend on who you ask.

But David Sullivan appointed Tim Steidten in the summer and by all accounts appears to have handed him the keys at the London Stadium, in a move which doesn’t appear especially supportive to a long-term Moyes future.

While there has been some solid success in the transfer market with the German and Moyes together there have also been suggestions of the pair butting heads.

And now, if the board are going to leave an under-pressure manager under review right up until his deal actually expires it is surely a long way from being a conducive environment for the Scot or his players to operate over the coming months.
