David Moyes not guaranteed to stay West Ham United manager despite Europa Conference League victory – journalist

David Moyes isn’t guaranteed to remain as West Ham United manager next season despite winning the Europa Conference League, according to Dean Jones.

Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol previously reported (14 May) that West Ham would hold talks with the Scot about his future at the London Stadium after their European commitments were finished.

The Hammers ended their 43-year wait for silverware on Wednesday night (7 June) by beating Fiorentina 2-1 at Eden Arena with a final-minute Jarrod Bowen winner.

However, when speaking to GiveMeSport, former Eurosport journalist Jones shared a surprise update on the 60-year-old’s future after he guided the club to their first European trophy since 1965.

“Moyes has been walking on glass all season and his job is constantly under threat but, somehow, he’s kept going,” he said.

“He has led West Ham into a European final, which they have won, so it looks like pretty safe ground now. But I’m still constantly told that he’s not guaranteed to keep his job this summer.

“The Europa Conference League final could have been his final game as West Ham’s manager. Obviously, it comes at a time when Celtic have lost their manager.”

Big surprise

After guiding the club to a historic European trophy, it would be extremely naive of West Ham United to sack Moyes.

If the Scot wants to end his time at the club on a high and feels he needs a new challenge, then that is fully understandable, but the ball surely has to be in his half of the court now regarding his future at the club.

Although he led the Hammers to a somewhat disappointing Premier League campaign, he had to juggle the intense European commitments alongside domestic competitions, as well as bedding in numerous new signings.

When all things are considered, he did one hell of a job taking this squad all the way to European glory.

It seems disrespectful to even be questioning Moyes’ future at the London Stadium, and surely the only path is to offer him an extension moving forward.

The sale of Declan Rice this summer should grant the Scot a large war chest to enter the market with, and this money can help him rejuvenate a somewhat ageing first-team squad.
