David Moyes maps out West Ham United return for Maxwel Cornet

David Moyes admits he is delighted by the return from injury of West Ham forward Maxwel Cornet and says he might need him back “quickly as we possibly can”.

The Ivorian winger, signed for £17.5m last summer, has been out of action since October 1 after suffering a calf injury against Wolverhampton Wanderers where he has had to see several specialists before returning.

The player took to his personal Instagram account this week to reveal his return to training with the West Ham squad ahead of their crucial clash with Nottingham Forest.

Moyes has been impressed by the forward’s return to training and admits the club need him back quickly. He said [via Football.London, 24 February]: “I’ve been really impressed by how he’s come back.

“Maxi’s come back this week and looked sharp and quick. He looks like he’s on the verge of being ready to be rolled out.

“I’m pleased because he’s been out for such a long time, I’m hoping I won’t need to take too much time but it’s very difficult. For someone to be out for five months and say: ‘okay get your gear on, you’re going to go straight back out’ is not happening that often.

“But, back to the point, we haven’t got much time so we might need to get him out as quickly as we possibly can.”

Desperate

Cornet’s return is a welcome boost for Moyes and the Hammers faithful, especially considering the underperformance of several of the club’s key stars throughout the campaign.

The Ivorian’s return will feel like a much-needed new signing for the East Londoners as the player certainly holds all the tools to single-handedly transform the club’s fortunes.

However, after being five months out, it’s important the club don’t rush him back too soon, but with Moyes’ job in serious peril right now, his desperation is certainly warranted.

With the likes of Michail Antonio, Jarrod Bowen, Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals struggling to impress this season, and the club failing to recapture their attacking threat so far this season, who else can Moyes call upon?

Cornet is desperately needed but in tip-top fitness and shape.
