David Moyes makes strong admission on West Ham summer transfer plans

David Moyes has admitted that a significant number of signings are needed at West Ham in the summer transfer window.

The Hammers failed to sign a single player in the January window, although they tried hard towards the end to bring in new faces.

West Ham lack depth in their squad, and it could turn out to be a big factor if they eventually miss out on the top four.

When asked if significant signings are required, the Hammers boss replied, as quoted by Football London: “I think yes. But you have to remember that not all signings work and you can think of lots of clubs who have spent lots of money and it hasn’t worked.

“Quite often it is an easy thing to be a journalist and just say ‘you need more signings.’

“It takes quite a lot of thought in trying to get the right player with the right character who fits what you want to do, and trying to spend the money the West Ham supporters have put into the club as wisely as I possibly can.”

Proper planning

One thing is clear. West Ham board understand that Moyes is doing a fabulous job at the club and he deserves to be backed in the transfer market.

In the January window, the Hammers reportedly made attempts to sign Leeds United duo Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha, but they should have focussed on signing a striker and a defender instead.

When they switched their attention to what they actually needed, it was too late. This summer, they need proper planning.

Signing a striker should be the first priority. Michail Antonio needs competition and the Hammers cannot afford to neglect that anymore.

The club should also look to sign a centre-back as a long-term replacement for Angelo Ogbonna. They should also bolster their wing-back positions with Ryan Fredericks being out of contract at the end of the season.

The midfield needs depth with Mark Noble’s contract expiring, while another attacking midfielder would be a healthy addition.

Above all, it will be interesting to see if Moyes can hold on to his key players like Declan Rice and Jarrod Bowen, both are bound to attract interest from Premier League rivals.
