David Moyes jokes he wants Kane and Rashford at West Ham

David Moyes hints that West Ham are still after a striker but reiterated that the club are not willing to sign a player for the sake of it.

The Irons have been linked with a host of names since Sebastien Haller left, most recently to Hwang Hee-Chan, Gaetan Laborde and Joshua King.

However, time is running out in the window to complete a deal, with Moyes confirming that the club is taking care in its transfer dealings.

In a press conference, reported by Football Daily, Moyes said, “If Harry Kane was available I’d love him, get me Rashford any of them … they can pick up the phone to me anytime.

“I want the best, I want to try and get the ones that really matter, I don’t want to bring in people who I don’t think will make a difference to me.

“We want to try our best to get the best we can.”

Due diligence

It is good to see Moyes in such a relaxed manner despite the fact we have not replaced Haller.

If we were struggling towards the bottom it is unlikely he would feel that way, and the club may be more desperate in their transfer approach.

We should be grateful that we are not splashing out cash just to say we have signed a striker.

In previous January transfer windows we have done exactly that only to sign flops, such as Andre Ayew and Jordan Hugill.

Instead, Moyes and the board are taking a sensible approach to recruitment.

The temporary addition of Jesse Lingard is evidence of that, with the Manchester United man arriving with a point to prove.

That could get the best out of him.

In regard to a striker, it may be a little disappointing that we have not strengthened given our league position.

That said, the funds we have saved can be put towards the summer’s budget, and allow us to sign a top-class forward that Moyes is seeking.

Only a high calibre striker will improve us in the long-term, and now is a good time to start planning for the future.
