David Moyes issue remains at West Ham United as new ‘evidence’ at London Stadium rubbished

By Kris Boratyn

Andy Dunn has suggested that despite West Ham United’s impressive victory against Freiburg in the Europa League, David Moyes’ position could still be questioned as results like this “should be standard for a club with Premier League resources”.

The Hammers have been doing very well in Europe this season but with some poor performances in the league, Moyes’ position as West Ham’s Head Coach has been questioned by fans and pundits.

Moyes would have hoped that the impressive victory against a decent Bundesliga side would silence some of his critics but that might not be the case, according to Dunn.

Writing in his Sunday Mirror column on 17 March (page 63), Dunn said: “If you are thinking of using West Ham’s 5-0 thumping of SC Freiburg as evidence of the sterling job being done by David Moyes… don’t.

“Moyes is doing a very decent job, but 5-0 against a team such as Freiburg should be standard for a club with Premier League resources.

“The West Ham wage bill is roughly five times what Freiburg spend, so the outcome is entirely predictable.

“In fact, almost as predictable as Liverpool’s annihilation of Sparta Prague – but not quite.”

West Ham United’s Europa League and Europa Conference League Success

Reflecting on West Ham United’s recent European adventures, it’s undeniable that Moyes has overseen two fruitful campaigns.

Therefore, questioning Moyes’ position at West Ham is unjust, given his recent achievements.

Last season, he led the team to the Europa Conference League final, clinching victory. In the current campaign, Moyes has taken the club further, aiming for another European triumph but this time in the Europa League.

Critics doubting his capabilities need only glance at the fans’ celebrations following West Ham’s win against Freiburg, which took the Hammers into the quarterfinals.

Such success is a testament to Moyes’ management and tactical knowledge. Loyalty to a manager often reaps rewards, and Moyes has proven his worth by taking West Ham to new heights on the European stage. In the wake of these achievements, any calls for his dismissal seem premature.

Moyes has not only so far silenced his critics but has also ensured that his name will be written into West Ham’s history.
