David Moyes identifies one area where West Ham may need to strengthen

West Ham United manager David Moyes has identified his defence as one area where he is lacking options during pre-season.

The Irons boss admitted that the heart of his defence is a problem area with a couple of injuries currently effecting his plans.

Issa Diop has been missing during pre-season, with another who could also play there, Declan Rice also struggling with an injury.

Moyes claimed he is short in that department after the Brentford clash, leading to his selection of a number of youngsters.

“We’ve tried to give them opportunities, but we’ve got a strong squad of senior players with the best part of two teams today,” he told Football London.

“We wanted to give as many of them 45 minutes as we could and we’re just a little short at centre back which meant we couldn’t change them around.”

Angelo Ogbonna and Fabian Balbuena started the 2-1 victory against the Bees, but who else could feature if another injury is picked up?

Jamal Baptiste is one name who has been utilised during pre-season by the Irons.

The 16-year-old played against Wycombe Wanderers recently, and is rated very highly in the England youth international system.

Winston Reid is also out on loan with Sporting Kansas after his shocking injury record, leaving Moyes with little-to-no options at the London Stadium.

With a move for Shane Duffy now looking unlikely, West Ham may need to act quick to get in another defender before their season opener against Newcastle.
