David Moyes discusses issues with VAR

West Ham manager David Moyes has slammed the referees and their use of VAR this season, saying they’re not working well enough to get decisions right.

The Hammers have been hit with some poor decisions in recent games, with Vladimir Coufal being sent off most recently against Arsenal in a decision that has since been confirmed as being wrong.

As West Ham prepare for their Carabao Cup quarter-final clash against Tottenham and their subsequent push for a top four place in the Premier League, big decisions become more important and more valuable.

Speaking during his press conference [via Football.London], the manager said he didn’t think referees were working well enough to make the right decision and admitted he was disappointed.

“I find it very hard that two sets of eyes wouldn’t get that correct,” he said. “I’m not a referee and I don’t make all the decisions but I’ve been a football player and a football manager and I’ve got an idea.

“I would hope that if I was sitting in front of a television watching it from four or five different angles I would probably have a really good opinion.

“If I was unsure I would certainly send the referee over to say ‘why don’t we collaborate on this to see how it goes rather than just leaving it to one person to do it.

“I think for me the disappointment is they are not working well enough between the referee and whoever is in the VAR studio to get the decision right.”

On the money

Moyes has always been a manager that speaks sense and this is another instance of that being the case.

As West Ham get away from mid-table, the decisions of the referees become more and more important in how successful they can be.

The referees need to start working together properly to ensure the right decisions are made, rather than working to protect the original decision that was made that was wrong.

The point of VAR is to make the game fairer and better, but right now it is failing miserably and if consistency isn’t found soon, it will become an even bigger issue in the Premier League.
