David Moyes ‘deserves time’ to turn West Ham United season around – Tony Cottee

Tony Cottee believes David Moyes “deserves time” to turn West Ham United’s poor season around.

The 59-year-old is increasingly under pressure after a horrible start for the Hammers in the 2022-23 campaign.

Cottee, while talking to Daily Star, expressed optimism that the Irons will be able to turn their season around.

“There shouldn’t be [any worry around Moyes’ future],” he said. “But this is the modern game, look at poor old Brendan Rodgers.

“He nearly got in the Champions League, he’s won the FA cup with Leicester and he loses six games and he’s in huge trouble.

“West Ham haven’t lost six games on the trot but it’s been a very slow start. But you mentioned the Conference League, two great results, two victories.

“What would you want to do, play great football and lose 4-3 and everyone comes away and says ‘what a great game but we lost’ you know? It’s a results business in football.

“So as good as the results have been in that competition, in the Premier League they haven’t been good enough.

“It’s only seven games though and what Moyes has achieved over the last few years, he has earned the time to get it right and bed in the new players.

“They did it four years ago at West Ham they brought in a lot of new faces and unsurprisingly it caused upset in the dressing room. But Moyes deserves time in my opinion.”

Time running out

West Ham entered the season with a lot of optimism after a couple of great campaigns as they managed to book a place in Europe for two consecutive years.

Those expectations increased even further as the Hammers ended up as one of the big spenders in Europe in the summer transfer window.

However, the start has been nothing short of a horror dream as the Irons are placed in the relegation zone with just four points from the first seven matches.

Those results are never going to be enough, especially for a club like West Ham where the expectations before a ball were kicked this season was about once again finishing in the top six.

Therefore, regardless of whatever anyone says, time is clearly running out for Moyes and he must ensure that the side must start producing results sooner than later or else his successful reign at London Stadium might well come to a premature end.
