David Moyes denies Said Benrahma transfer rumours amid potential last game at West Ham

David Moyes has downplayed any transfer rumours surrounding Said Benrahma and an exit from West Ham following his red card in the FA Cup on Tuesday 16 January.

It was reported, as per Foot Mercato, that the Algerian winger had been the subject of a loan-to-buy bid from Marseille amid a lack of playing time at West Ham, with the London side turning down the offer.

However, Moyes has delivered an opposite verdict on the transfer news, stating that he has “not heard” anything at all about a potential move away from West Ham for Benrahma.

“Not true,” Moyes said to The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas on Wednesday (17 January). “I’ve not heard that at all.”

Denying the obvious

If the defeat to Bristol City in the FA Cup proved anything, it was that West Ham need to get rid of Benrahma during the January transfer window.

The 28-year-old was shown a red card after lashing out at Joe Williams, kicking the Bristol City man after a tackle left the Algerian curled up on the floor. At 1-0 down already, the Hammers were left with a mountain to climb against a decent Championship side.

Although Moyes’ plans with Benrahma have been made clear this season, having only handed him five league starts this season, the Scot has refused to admit that the club have received bids from Ligue 1.

The winger has been a good servant at the club since arriving from Brentford in 2020, making 155 appearances while scoring 24 goals and assisting 19 others. However, with Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus all preferred in attack, game time has been hard to come by this season.

Though West Ham are unlikely to make a profit on the £30million total spend on the player, initially signing him on a £5million loan deal before triggering a buy-clause worth £25million including add-ons, it is still time to move on.

In other West Ham news, an agent is reportedly in talks with a player’s club amid supposed interest from the Irons.
