David Moyes could revive Celtic links after West Ham United exit if Brendan Rodgers leaves

David Moyes could spark new links to the Celtic job after a West Ham exit if Brendan Rodgers were to leave, according to The Times.

The Scot was believed to be in the running to replace now-Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou a year ago and a report in on the paper’s website (26 April) suggests he could again be mentioned for a Parkhead switch if, as expected, he leaves the London Stadium.

It is unclear if Rodgers is currently expected to move on from Celtic, where he is in pole position to win the SPFL title, and is into a Scottish Cup final against Rangers, but his return to Glasgow hasn’t been entirely smooth.

The Irons have held talks with Julen Lopetegui and Ruben Amorim to replace Moyes, whose contract expires this summer, although the latter is believed to be out of the running already.

Could West Ham boss return to Celtic after 41 years?

Clearly a number of factors have to fall into place if Moyes were to end up back where he started his playing career in Glasgow.

His exit from the London Stadium is still not yet guaranteed, with the 60-year-old suggesting in his pre-Liverpool press conference the matter still needs to be discussed and a joint decision reached, but it certainly seems more likely than ever with action being taken behind the scenes on a possible successor.

Given how Tim Stiedten’s arrival in the summer seems to have been counterintuitive to keeping Moyes at West Ham there is good reason to believe the plan was to let him go last year after a miserable Premier League campaign, until the Europa Conference League triumph made that impossible in the board’s eyes.

So if the Hammers boss was who Celtic wanted to replace Postecolgou before the European trophy blocked that route it is feasible that they might be moved to try a second time assuming he becomes available, even if an uneasy reunion with Rodgers ends in silverware.

David Sullivan has come under criticism from the fans during his time at West Ham

There’s no doubting the positive effect Moyes has had on West Ham since he rescued them from potential relegation in his second spell, and the level of success in recent seasons surpasses anything in recent years.

But there is a growing feeling that he has taken the club as far as he can, and even his usual strengths are beginning to falter, with defensive solidity non-existent at times as the frequency of heavy defeats has increased.
