David Moyes baffled by decision in West Ham United defeat v Brentford

David Moyes has been left baffled by the decision to award Brentford’s winning goal in West Ham United’s Premier League defeat on Saturday 4 November.

The Irons came from behind to lead 2-1 at half-time, only for Thomas Frank’s side to score twice in the second half to extend the Hammers’ winless run in the Premier League to four matches, with Nathan Collins scoring the winner in the 69th minute.

But Moyes was left confused by the decision to award the home side’s winning goal, believing that the linesman had missed an offside in the build-up and was adamant in his belief that the strike should have been ruled out by VAR.

Speaking to Sky Sports (4 November) he said: “I’d like you to check the third goal because I think it’s offside in front of the linesman and leads to a corner kick or a throw-in, I should say that they score from.

“I thought going out at half-time we had a real chance and I was expecting us to be much stronger and do a better job.

“I’d like to have a look at the third goal and the linesman’s position and why it wasn’t chalked off for offside.”

Can’t blame the officials

There have been plenty of matches in the Premier League over the last few months where it has been perfectly reasonable for teams to blame the officials or VAR for their defeats, but the Hammers’ defeat to Brentford was not one of those fixtures.

West Ham could have and really should have been home and dry by half-time, had Michail Antonio either slotted home his effort in the first half, or even left it for Said Benrahma to tap home at the back post, while their defending left a lot to be desired.

The Irons are the masters of their own downfall at the moment and seem unable to cling onto a lead when they get it as they ship simple goals that could be easily avoided if they just switched on slightly more at the back when placed under pressure.

Ultimately, it seems unreasonable of Moyes to complain about a potential offside which occurred in a completely separate phase of the game to Brentford’s winner, when looking to justify yet another poor defeat for his side.

Nobody wants to see officials make mistakes, but West Ham had plenty of chances to put the game to bed long before Collins’ winning goal.
