David James shares ‘difficult’ West Ham United admission after loss v Liverpool

David James has admitted it was a “cakewalk” for Liverpool against West Ham in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Wednesday (20 December).

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast on Thursday (21 December, via BBC Sport), the ex-Hammers and Reds keeper said he thought the Irons were going to be “strong” and that it was going to be a “difficult” game.

He added that the Merseysiders were “awesome” as they cruised to a 5-1 victory, but he admitted that David Moyes’ side didn’t play particularly well at Anfield.

West Ham

“Liverpool were awesome,” said James. “That was coupled with the fact that West Ham did not play particularly well.

“I met a lot of West Ham fans before the game and when they were asking me what I thought the score was going to be, I thought West Ham were going to be strong and it was going to be a difficult game – but that Liverpool would get through.

“In the end, it turned into a bit of a cakewalk. Dominik Szoboszlai’s goal was absolutely superb and Curtis Jones was great.

“They just looked like a defeated side when the second goal went in. West Ham had not done much before it but Liverpool did look superb.”

No fight

It was an extremely weak performance from the West Ham players after Moyes decided to make six changes to his side against Liverpool.

While a number of the players named in the starting lineup haven’t played too many minutes this season, they showed no fight whatsoever as they looked to show why they should be more involved.

It was always going to be difficult to try and get a result at Anfield, but the travelling fans would have made the journey expecting much more from their side.

West Ham

It really highlighted the lack of depth the Hammers have at their disposal as the defence looked all over the place and the creative players were nonexistent.

It’s highly likely that a few of those individuals that didn’t take their chance against the Reds won’t be at the club much longer as some more quality is definitely needed in certain areas of the squad.
