Darren Randolph’s new West Ham deal would see decrease in his wages

West Ham United could hand goalkeeper Darren Randolph a new contract on reduced wages, according to ExWHUemployee.

The reliable Hammers insider claimed on the West Ham Way Patreon podcast on Monday evening (24 January at 1:00:45) that the Republic of Ireland international, 34, was close to leaving for Aston Villa earlier in the January transfer window before a move fell through.

Randolph could still move before the market shuts at the end of the month if an offer comes in for him, but if that does not happen, a contract extension would see him be on lesser wages than he was during the first two years of his deal.

Smart?

Randolph rejoined West Ham in January 2020 as the first signing of David Moyes’ second spell in a £4million move from Middlesbrough on a three-year contract, and it appears he was certainly going to leave this month.

He is currently behind Lukasz Fabianski, Alphonse Areola and David Martin in the pecking order and on high wages, and having not made an appearance this season, it is hard to see him making any before it ends.

Nevertheless, it appears he will be around for a little longer than expected.

With less than six days left in the transfer market, a lot can still happen, but having him remain at the London Stadium on reduced wages makes sense economically if he is unable to secure a January exit.

The Hammers have not been able to bring in any new faces so far, but they are expected to leave it late in the window as usual before getting one or two additions in.

Whether that could have a say on Randolph’s future remains to be seen, but it appears Moyes remains keen on having him around for a while.
