Darren Bent clashes with talkSPORT caller over ‘ridiculous’ West Ham United and Arsenal verdict
Darren Bent has clashed with a talkSPORT caller who claimed West Ham United could have a more successful season than Arsenal if they win the Europa Conference League.
The Hammers have breezed into the Europa Conference League semi-finals with two legs against AZ Alkmaar all that stands between David Moyes’ side and a chance at a first taste of silverware since 1980.
Despite their impeccable European form, the Hammers are embroiled in a Premier League relegation scrap, sitting four points above the drop zone with four games of the season remaining.

On Thursday afternoon (4 May) a talkSPORT caller claimed that if Arsenal came second in the Premier League and West Ham avoided relegation and won a trophy, the Irons would have had the more successful season.
“That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard in my life,” Bent fired back.
“My point is that if West Ham were to go down but win a trophy, they’ve not had a better season than Arsenal.”
Ridiculous view
As much as a trophy would mean to West Ham United, Bent is right on this one.
Despite their blemish-free European form this season, the Hammers have been extremely poor in the Premier League, especially considering the £150million which was spent on the first team last summer.
The signings of Lucas Paqueta and Gianluca Scamacca were supposed to solidify West Ham’s position in the top eight, and the fact that they are still languishing in a relegation battle with four games to go is a little embarrassing.
A trophy and Premier League survival would certainly be classed as a successful season at the end of the day, but this would be nothing when compared to the incredible season Arsenal are experiencing.
Under Mikel Arteta, the Gunners have moved from a side that were scrapping with the Hammers for Europa League into a team who are taking Manchester City all the way to the final furlong in the race for Premier League glory.
