Danny Mills urges West Ham to swoop for ‘quality’ ace ‘in a heartbeat’

West Ham have made no bones about the fact that they are on the hunt for a new goalkeeper this January.

The Hammers have had an absolute nightmare with Roberto ever since he was brought in as deputy to Lukasz Fabianski over the summer, and while David Martin has been a marked improvement, a more sustainable covering option would still be a welcome investment.

One name that has been mentioned in relation to a possible swoop is that of Bournemouth stopper Asmir Begovic, with Sky Sports suggesting that the Irons have been given the opportunity to sign the veteran on loan from the Cherries.

And Danny Mills has claimed that the Hammers should jump at the chance.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “A goalkeeper of that quality, people thought Nigel Martyn was at the end of his career then he was fantastic for a few more seasons, Mark Schwarzer did similar as he was good for both Leicester and Chelsea.

“I think experienced keepers just give you that little bit of assurance, and for a young keeper, it gives you an opportunity to learn.

“If he is available, I’d take him in a heartbeat.”

You’d be tempted to agree with Mills too.

Begovic might have fallen down the pecking order at the south coast, but there’s no doubting his ability or his experience.

This is a man who made 750 saves in the Premier League in 252 appearances, as per the league themselves, and who has gone on to play on loan for a Champions League side in Qarabag even after he has fallen out of favour in the English top flight.

Of course, a permanent deal would probably suit the Hammers better than a loan, and that could still prove to be a factor, but you’d have to say that Mills makes a very good point here.
