Danny Gabbidon savages West Ham boss Moyes for ‘worrying’ thing he saw v Man City
Former West Ham defender Daniel Gabbidon has savaged Hammers boss David Moyes for not utilising his bench effectively against Manchester City.
The Irons slumped to an uninspired 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City on Wednesday night, with Moyes opting for an extremely defensive starting lineup in an attempt to stifle Pep Guardiola’s men.
That meant leaving attacking talents Sebastien Haller, Felipe Anderson, and Manuel Lanzini on the bench for the duration of the match, with Moyes’ men failing to register a single shot on target.
And it’s safe to say that Gabbidon was less than impressed.
Writing on his personal Twitter account after the match, he said: “Imagine being desperate for points, being 2-0 down and not bringing on Haller, Anderson or Lanzini.
“If that’s not accepting defeat I don’t know what is!
“Or does he think these boys don’t have the stomach for the fight? Worrying.”
Does Gabbidon have a right to be annoyed?
Absolutely.
Perhaps it was pragmatism on David Moyes’ part to try and stifle Manchester City instead of going toe-to-toe with them, but the truth is that by putting out such a defensive lineup, and then persevering with it even as things clearly got away from his side, it showed a damning lack of ambition on the manager’s part.
Nobody is expecting miracles at West Ham – that kind of optimism has long been extinguished by habitual underperformance – but at the very least, if this side are to go down, you want them to go down fighting.
At this present moment in time, they look as if they couldn’t fight their way to the front of a queue at the Post Office.
Worrying times, indeed.
