Dan Plumley reacts to Betway fine after West Ham United website development
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive West Ham United columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium...
Dan Plumley has insisted that West Ham United do have some blame to take after Betway were fined for activity on the club website.
The betting company and main sponsor of the Irons’ were fined £400,000 over the past month for advertising on the children’s section of the website.
Finance Expert, Plumley admitted that West Ham need to be more careful as they will know the PR spin on matters such as these when they are involved.

“It’s one of those where we know these things are generated automatically so that’s part of the challenge,” he exclusively told West Ham Zone.
“You hope it’s inadvertently given that the sanctions around. You’ve got to look from both sides of it, the majority of the blame for that happening, mistake or otherwise is with Betway, but you’re also wanting to police your own website tightly if you are West Ham as you know the PR spin, it’s going to mention the club as part of it.
“Both of them have to take responsibility there, most of it with Betway, but the club should be keeping an eye on it, for sure.”

This is not a good look for all those concerned.
Betway have been a long-term sponsor of the club, but their activity on the club website is inexplicable, whether it was intentional or not – it cannot happen and they accepted that.
With more scrutiny coming on betting companies in the Premier League, incidents like this do not help, and only add fuel to the fire of change being delivered soon on the biggest stage.
