Dan Coombs has revealed his thoughts on West Ham and Jesse Lingard

Manchester United expert Dan Coombs has shared his view on West Ham and their failed pursuit of Jesse Lingard.

Speaking to Hammers News, the United in Focus writer discussed why Lingard’s move to the Hammers failed and what the future has in store for the 28-year-old.

Lingard was almost relentlessly linked with a move to the London Stadium, but in the end, the move didn’t happen, and he remained at Old Trafford for better or for worse.

West Ham

Coombs said: “It seems like a mix of United and West Ham being unable to agree terms, and Lingard’s desire to stay, plus a lack of alternative offers.

“Ultimately, if he had said he wanted to sign for West Ham, I believe it would have got done one way or another.

“It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Lingard is offered a new deal, however, regardless of whether we keep or sell him.

“Anything less than £20 million would be a bit disappointing, but I think we will do right by him. If Lingard says, ‘this is the club I want to leave for, please let me go’, United would consider a £15-20m fee out of respect for him, rather than have an unhappy player on the books.”

Lingard to West Ham finally dead?

Certainly, it seems as if the Irons didn’t actually push that hard for Lingard in the end.

Instead, they made a move for Nikola Vlasic, who plays the same positions as Lingard, and it would be a surprise if the Irons look to sign the 28-year-old in January.

It did appear as if it was a nailed-on move, but Lingard didn’t seem that convinced, and now he must compete with a wealth of talent at Old Trafford.

West Ham

He played well for England on Sunday, but surely if he finds his game time limited once more, his England career will come to a halt again?

Lingard was superb for the Hammers last season, but it increasingly looks like he used the Irons to get his career back on track rather than as an opportunity to seal a permanent move to the club.

It will be interesting to see how he does this season, but we can’t see him getting much game time for the Red Devils in the Premier League.
