Crystal Palace agree terms for Maxwel Cornet as 11th-hour West Ham deal hangs in the balance

Crystal Palace have agreed terms for a potential loan deal for West Ham outcast Maxwel Cornet but the transfer may still not go through, according to Ed Aarons.

The Guardian journalist reported via X [1 February] that Roy Hodgson’s side has agreed terms but the transfer hinges on the Hammers being able to find a replacement.

West Ham have registered interest in Al Ittihad’s Jota and Ibrahim Osman from Nordsjaelland this month but both deals looked to have collapsed, which could mean the winger stays at the London Stadium.

Just hasn’t worked out

Cornet showed just why the club purchased him from Burnley in the summer of 2022, scoring against Sheffield United in the team’s last outing. However, that has been his only highlight this season.

The game against the Blades was his only Premier League start of the season, with Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus all preferred ahead of him. Said Benrahma has also been above him in the pecking order.

The Ivory Coast international was seen to be an incredible talent during his time with the Clarets, scoring nine goals in 28 appearances in a struggling season. It has just not worked out at London Stadium, though.

West Ham

With just one goal in 31 appearances in West Ham colours, all hope has been lost that Cornet can make the desired impact under David Moyes, with the manager continuing to ignore him, even during the club’s injury crisis.

However, the Hammers do not look likely to find a replacement with just hours remaining of the transfer window. With Benrahma and Pablo Fornals edging closer to exits, Cornet may just be needed to make up the numbers for the remainder of the season.
