Conor Coventry one of five players who could leave West Ham United this summer

West Ham midfielder Conor Coventry could leave the club this summer, according to The Athletic.

Roshane Thomas wrote for the website on 21 July that he expects Coventry to leave the club, especially if the Hammers manage to sign Lille midfielder Amadou Onana.

The Athletic journalist also added that the likes of Nikola Vlasic, Issa Diop, Emmanuel Longelo and Darren Randolph are likely to leave at some stage during the transfer window.

Interesting midfield situation

It is clear that Declan Rice will not leave the club this summer unless there’s a massive bid for him that the Hammers cannot refuse.

This seems unlikely at the moment. Rice has a contract at the club until 2024, and West Ham have an option to extend his deal for another year.

If the Hammers sign Onana, the situation will become interesting.

David Moyes always prefers a two-man midfield. He is unlikely to change his system and introduce a three-man midfield next season just to accommodate a new player.

West Ham

Tomas Soucek and Rice forged a strong midfield partnership last season, but the dynamics could change if Onana joins. In that case, Onana and Soucek and likely to rotate alongside Rice in midfield.

West Ham have also added depth in midfield by signing Flynn Downes. If Onana joins, he is likely to become the fourth choice option at the club.

Coventry will further drop down the pecking order. The 22-year-old has managed only a handful of games for the senior side, and his future could lie away from the London Stadium.
