Complications may emerge as West Ham United eye transfer of Manchester United defender Harry Maguire

West Ham are keen on signing a centre-back this summer and have been linked with Manchester United captain Harry Maguire.

ESPN reveals [7 June] that the English centre-back is currently on £200,000-a-week – an already staggering figure for any club not owned by a billionaire.

Guardian now reports [6 July] that qualification for the Champions League will see his wages hike even further.

Apart from that, Manchester United may even demand up to £40million for his services which will further add to the complications to get this deal over the line.

The England international cost them £80million in 2019 and has been a polarising figure among fans since then.

However, the general consensus now is that he’s perhaps not an asset to the first team anymore and has fallen out of favour with Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman is looking to offload him but for half of what they paid to sign him four years ago – still representing an expensive deal.

The Hammers will be getting a decent amount of funds from the Declan Rice sale to Arsenal, but this is still something that they might not be able to afford.

His wages and transfer fee make a deal for him unlikely to happen this summer.

Had he been at the top of his game, it would’ve made sense to consider that kind of outlay, but currently, significant compromises will be needed to get it done.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers are already preparing to cash in on the Declan Rice money as they hold a transfer meeting in London as they’re confident of sealing a £50million signing.
