Club source details West Ham response after reports suggest contract talks with forward
West Ham United forward Michail Antonio was phenomenal after the enforced break in the Premier League.
The forward was a major cog behind the Hammers ensuring their top-flight survival after a disappointing season at the London Stadium.
Antonio reached double figures in goals for the first time in his career and even managed to hit four against Norwich in that memorable win.
The experienced forward excelled that much that recent reports have surfaced over a potential new deal at the club.
The Daily Mail have suggested on their website that the 30-year-old could become one of the Irons’ top-earners in pre-season.
That report has been instantly shut down by the Hammers though, who have claimed that they simply aren’t true.
Reliable club source, Claret and Hugh have reported that the Irons won’t open new contract talks with Antonio until December at the earliest.
That would be very smart from David Moyes. Antonio has been very injury prone ever since joining the Hammers and with one-year left on his deal, they still have time.
It was detailed in that report that West Ham have a two-year option to add to his current deal, so next season can be used as an evaluation stage.
Should Antonio carry on his cracking form, a new deal would be a no-brainer, but if he was to struggle with fitness and make little impact, the time could come to move on.
Either way, this is smart from the Irons not to go too quick.
