Chris Sutton shares ‘ugly’ West Ham United relegation claim

Chris Sutton has suggested things could turn “ugly” if West Ham United lose to Southampton at the London Stadium on Sunday.

David Moyes’ men are currently 18th in the Premier League, just one point ahead of the Saints, who sit at the foot of the table.

However, Sutton does still expect the Hammers to survive with their fixtures at the London Stadium set to be crucial.

West Ham

“David Moyes is probably sick of hearing how close he is to the sack,” said Sutton (Daily Mail, 30 March).

“One loss can be the end of you and West Ham’s next game against Southampton is as big as they come. Moyes knows the pressure he is under.

“Third bottom in the Premier League, West Ham are another team who cannot buy a win away from home.

“They have been relying on the London Stadium, but the atmosphere could turn ugly if they lose to Southampton. Still, I expect West Ham to survive. Worryometer score of 8/10.”

Must win

Moyes will be sick of hearing the same phrases, but, once again, this is a must-win affair for the Hammers. A defeat could see the Irons hit the bottom of the Premier League table and that could force the board’s hand when it comes to the Scot’s future.

Considering the money which was dished out in the summer, Championship football cannot be contemplated. Home fixtures against struggling teams must be capitalised on. They were superb against Nottingham Forest and a repeat performance on Sunday (2 April) would be welcomed.

West Ham United

Surely a defeat will see the board act? Moyes has been on the edge for far too long. If West Ham fail to make the most of their games in hand they will be in grave danger. The options to replace Moyes aren’t plentiful at the moment, but a fresh face and new ideas could be what this group of players needs.

Nevertheless, points are needed and that simply has to start on Sunday (2 April).
