Chris Sutton shares immediate reaction after West Ham United announce David Moyes exit
Chris Sutton has shared his immediate reaction after West Ham United announced David Moyes would be leaving the London Stadium.
The Hammers released a club statement on Monday (6 May) to announce that the Scotsman would be parting ways with the Hammers following the expiry of his contract at the end of the Premier League season.
Reports suggest that former Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui will be the man to succeed him this summer and while BBC pundit Sutton was keen to heap praise on Moyes, he admitted the Spaniard has a tough job ahead of him.
Writing on X on Monday (6 May) he said: “David Moyes can leave West Ham with his head held high. He’s done a brilliant job …tough act to follow…”
Will West Ham United hire Julen Lopetegui after David Moyes exit announcement?
Moyes’ exit at the London Stadium had been coming for a while and although Sutton is right to suggest the Scotsman can walk away with his held high, the form so far in 2024 has just simply not been good enough.
Although fans and supporters alike will always heap praise on Moyes for bringing silverware back to East London and deservedly so, results are the most important thing in football and a change in the dugout was necessary.
Hopefully, Lopetegui will have the desired impact when he arrives and improve the style of play ahead of next season. He may not be most supporters first choice, but he is a proven winner and his record speaks for itself.
Whether or not an announcement will be made soon around his appointment remains to be seen, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the former Real Madrid boss in and around East London in the coming weeks and days.
