Chris Sutton rages at West Ham United fans after David Moyes sack question emerges again
Chris Sutton has hit out at West Ham fans after questions emerged again about David Moyes’ future, telling them they should be pinching themselves given the position the club is in.
The former Chelsea striker pointed to victories against Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United, brushing aside the 5-0 defeat to Fulham, and claiming Moyes is doing a phenomenal job at the London Stadium.
Sutton insisted the calls for Moyes’ head are “ridiculous” and could not understand where they were coming from given the league position and success the Hammers have had in recent years.
Speaking on the Monday Night Club [22 January], Sutton ranted: “I don’t think there’s negativity amongst balanced football people with regard to David Moyes and the job he’s done. I don’t know why this keeps rearing its ugly head.
“A couple of weeks ago they beat Arsenal on their own patch, they’ve beaten Tottenham, they’ve beaten Manchester United. Alright that [5-0 defeat to Fulham] is a one-off.
“At the weekend they had a couple of horrendous decisions go against them, let’s get it right. They’re a couple of points off Tottenham who we’ve all raved about this season. David Moyes has done a phenomenal job.
“If you’re a West Ham fan, you should be pinching yourself. Being sixth in the league, Europa Conference League, sixth and seventh the previous seasons. Why on earth are people attacking him? It’s ridiculous.”
Not as one-sided as it may seem
To an extent, Sutton is right. With their high league position, topping their Europa League group, and having won European silverware less than a year ago, West Ham fans should certainly be grateful for what Moyes has done in his time at the London Stadium.
However, that doesn’t dismiss the rightful concerns surrounding Moyes’ management and the frustrations of the fans which go deeper than simply results and league positions as are so often brought up in this debate.

It shouldn’t be a case of being careful what you wish for at West Ham. You can play more exciting football than Moyes does, particularly with the players at the club, without sacrificing the results. That’s all the fans want.
Moyes probably deserves more respect than he receives from large sections of the fanbase at the London Stadium, but that doesn’t mean their concerns aren’t accurate and fair. This debate will rage on, but ultimately the final decision comes down to the club.
In other West Ham news, the Hammers want to sign off on a new incoming deal ASAP.
