Chris Sutton makes Lopetegui and Moyes admission at West Ham – ‘Undermined’
West Ham United “undermined” David Moyes during his time in charge compared to Julen Lopetegui, according to Chris Sutton.
Sutton discussed the Hammers on BBC Radio 5 Live on Saturday evening following their 5-2 defeat at the hands of Arsenal [30 November, 46:20].
In conversation with an Irons-supporting caller to the show, the former Premier League striker posed the question that Lopetegui does not have the players on his side.
The caller stated: “All I want is for players to give it their all, and play for the shirt for 90 minutes.”
“So you’re saying under Lopetegui, they’re not doing that, and they did under David Moyes up until the last few months of his time in charge? David Moyes was undermined while he was there,” Sutton responded.
Julen Lopetegui does not have West Ham time on his side
The frustration for Hammers supporters is that after all the chiming from the club about shopping in a higher window over the summer, the management handover appears sideways.
The overwhelming majority of fans at the London Stadium will never let Moyes’ achievement of the Conference League in 2023 be played down, but many remained keen for a new era to begin.
But for a coach with such experience as Lopetegui, his credentials in the English game are limited and many times he has stood by and seen his West Ham outfit defensively dismantled.
An added factor comes in of the obvious capabilities of the Spaniard’s squad as individuals, cited from the levels they had previously shown under Moyes, and the new signings’ standards at previous clubs.
Even as a collective, they showed an immense display of mettle last Monday at Newcastle United [25 November].
Already, though, many West Ham fans were ready for the crash back down to earth on Saturday against Arsenal and the revival of talk around how long Lopetegui has left in the tank.
