Chris Sutton blasts ‘shocking’ Tottenham as he predicts result v West Ham United

Chris Sutton predicts Tottenham will “easily” beat West Ham United when the sides meet in the Premier League on Saturday 19 October.

Julen Lopetegui has won two of his opening seven league matches in East London but his side head into the Premier League restart fresh off a 4-1 win against Ipswich Town whereas Tottenham are reeling from a 3-2 loss to Brighton.

Sutton predicts Spurs will march to a resounding victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in his predictions for BBC Sport [18 October] despite the conflicting results heading into the international break.

He said: “West Ham got the win they needed against Ipswich before the international break, but it was a very different story for Tottenham against Brighton.

“It is typical, really, because everyone had been singing Ange Postecoglou’s praises following Spurs’ win at Manchester United the previous week, talking about how he had built a team with an identity… but then they fell apart in the second half against the Seagulls.

“I don’t think Spurs’ defeat was down to his style of football, though. It was because of shocking defending, and the way they lost duels all over the pitch.

“I am expecting them to bounce back here, helped by the fact that Son Heung-min is in contention after a few weeks out.

“I’ve been saying it for a while now, but Tottenham are going to give someone an absolute hiding sooner or later. I don’t think it will happen against the Hammers, but I do think they will win this one easily enough.

“Prediction: 3-1.”

West Ham can use momentum to dismantle Tottenham

Lopetegui has been disappointing in East London, to say the least, and, the revelation the Spaniard anticipated a slow start this season will do little to ease the concerns of the supporters who may still hold out hope for a European finish this season.

Until West Ham progress towards the targets set before the season began, names such as Brentford boss Thomas Frank will continue to be linked as a potential successor for Lopetegui as his appointment has yet to yield the required results.

The result against Ipswich was certainly a step in the right direction, Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta, and Mohammed Kudus are back among the goals, and the foundations are there to build upon.

Ange Postecoglu will be determined to right the wrongs from the Brighton loss but the momentum is in the visitor’s favour, David Moyes recorded a 2-1 win in North London last season and with a stronger squad on paper, there is no reason Lopetegui cannot repeat the feat.

The Hammers are more than capable of sending a statement to the rest of the Premier League and earning a result against Tottenham.

Now is the time for Lopetegui to justify his appointment to West Ham and kickstart their season.
