Chris Hughton shares Mohammed Kudus fitness update in new West Ham United boost

Chris Hughton has provided an update on West Ham United winger Mohammed Kudus, admitting the Ghanaian international has returned to training after a recent injury issue.

The Hammers attacker missed the Black Stars’ opening game of the African Cup of Nations, a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde, having joined the squad late after he picked up a hamstring injury in the Premier League win over Arsenal.

While Ghana manager Hughton admits that he is still unsure whether or not the 23-year-old will be fit to face Egypt on Thursday (18 January) he suggested that he could be involved having played a part in recent training sessions.

As quoted by the Daily Mail on Wednesday (17 January) he said: “We will continue to assess him. We have today and tomorrow morning to assess.

“He has trained the last few days, but we will assess him, as I say, today and tomorrow and make a decision tomorrow.”

Good news

This news could well be taken two different ways by West Ham supporters. On one hand, it is excellent to hear that their star boy is back fit and available having recovered from his recent injury, but on the other, it could mean he’s away from the London Stadium for a while longer yet.

The Black Stars are typically a much better side when the 23-year-old is fit and available and should he feature against Egypt, it will not only boost their chances of beating Egypt but in turn their chances of qualifying as well.

In an ideal world from the Hammers’ perspective, Kudus will be fit enough to return to the fold and avoid injury against Egypt, but Ghana will also taste defeat so that David Moyes can get his electric winger back among his squad at the London Stadium.

Hopefully, for Kudus’ sake, he will manage to pass Hughton and his medical staff’s late assessments to play some part in the clash on Thursday night, no matter the eventual result.
