Brian Deane defends West Ham decision to not sign Sebastien Haller replacement

Former West Ham United player Brian Deane has said that he understood why David Moyes and the club opted against signing a striker in January.

The underperforming Sebastien Haller was shown the door in the winter window, and the perception was that the Hammers were lining up a like-for-like replacement.

However, the club opted against moving for a striker and instead got Jesse Lingard on loan.

Initially, the club faced tremendous backlash for it, but in hindsight, one can see how good a deal it was.

Deane believes the same thing could be applied to not signing a Haller replacement.

In an interview with Football FanCast, he said, “It’s difficult because I think what people don’t realise a lot of the time is that you can turn round and say they should have brought a striker in, but the manager might not always be able to get what he wants.

“Bringing in somebody for the sake of it sometimes doesn’t work.”

West Ham

Makes a valid point

We were linked with an array of players, who at the time, felt like good options, but in the future, they could’ve proven to be bad signings.

Also, in January the available players aren’t as good as the ones in the summer. If the club had someone in mind who they had been scouting for a while, they would’ve gone all out for him.

But that wasn’t the case. We were only linked with players that were available for a variety of reasons.

Moyes has also proven himself to be a quality manager and the club would be more willing to let him get in the players he wants. He’s so far enjoyed a good run with most of his transfer choices, and we’re certain to sign a striker in the summer.
