Brendan Rodgers stance on Celtic exit predicted as West Ham United move mooted
Chris Sutton has suggested Brendan Rodgers wouldn’t want to “downgrade” and move to West Ham United from Celtic if Julen Lopetegui was sacked.
The Hammers boss has come under fire from supporters after the Irons extended their winless start to the league season at the London Stadium with a 3-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday (21 September).
Some fans are already calling for a change in the dugout, with one supporter mooting Rodgers as Lopetegui’s potential successor, much to the frustration of former Hoops forward Sutton.
Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live on Saturday (21 September, 19:45) the supporter said: “Another possible name that I think would have done a good job was Brendan Rodgers.
Sutton replied: “He’s at a huge club north of the border.”
The fan hit back saying: “I think if the money was right he might have gone to West Ham.”
Sutton responded: “Oh come on. He wouldn’t want to downgrade to West Ham from Celtic.”
Will West Ham sack Julen Lopetegui amid London Stadium exit rumours?
Some Hammers supporters are already frustrated with Lopetegui and his style of football in East London, but the talk around his potential exit or sacking does feel more than a bit premature at this stage.
The former Real Madrid manager did spend a lot of money this summer, but this squad is still gelling together and he will likely still be unsure of what his best team currently is.
It will take time for the new West Ham boss to find the right system and style that gets the best out of this squad.
It is naive to assume that Rodgers would be any more successful if he were given the keys to the London Stadium.

The Northern Irishman has been a success at Celtic and he had positive periods at both Leicester City and Liverpool, but he has been criticised in the past for the same negative approach that has frustrated fans under Lopetegui and David Moyes.
Appointing the Celtic boss, if he were even willing to leave Parkhead, would do little more than paper over the cracks at the London Stadium.
