Ben Johnson determined to get new West Ham deal

West Ham defender Ben Johnson has impressed heavily this season, and he is reportedly eyeing a new contract at the club.

According to Claret and Hugh, the 22-year-old is determined to bag a new deal, and he is in “pole position” to make his point.

Both parties are expected to hold talks over a new deal at the end of the season when his contract decisions will be made.

Deserving

This has been a breakthrough campaign for the 22-year-old full-back.

He has hardly put a foot wrong this season and has made 26 appearances in all competitions so far.

While he has mostly excelled as a right-back, especially in the absence of Vladimir Coufal, he has done equally well on the left-hand side.

He is a solid defender who is very good at ball interceptions. It shows his maturity in reading the game. The youngster is also good with tackles and blocks.

Probably he needs to improve a bit in the attacking areas. Modern-day full-backs are expected to deliver fantastic crosses, and Johnson should improve on that.

Of course, it depends on the system. For example, at Liverpool, Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is obviously a marvellous talent, is given more licence to join the attack at every opportunity.

David Moyes doesn’t expect his full-backs to remain stationed in the opposition third most of the time. Having said that, there’s always room for improvement, and Johnson deserves a new deal.

In other West Ham news, David Moyes has been impressed by this EFL goalkeeper and wants to sign him in the summer.
