Ben Johnson blasted on talkSPORT after what he did on West Ham United return for Ipswich

Dave Rowe slammed Ben Johnson after his “terrible” defending caused Ipswich to concede during their game against West Ham United.

The former Hammers ace made a poor passback to his goalkeeper Arijanet Muric which Michail Antonio managed to capitalise on and create something from.

Julen Lopetegui’s men managed to triumph over the Tractor Boys in a 4-1 win which saw them finally break their five-game winless streak.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (16:09, 5 October), Rowe shared his verdict on the right-backs defending.

“Ipswich are causing their own problems here,” Rowe said.

“They’re giving the ball away disastrously, it all started with a terrible backpass by Ben Johnson which Muric half dealt with under pressure from Antonio.

“It then ricocheted off Antonio and then West Ham were able to build again down the right-hand side”.

West Ham United finally win

After what has been a poor start to the 2024/25 season, West Ham finally managed to break their winless streak and triumph against newly-promoted Ipswich.

The 4-1 win is a real statement of intent from Lopetegui and his men but, if it wasn’t for another former Hammers player in Kalvin Phillips, they wouldn’t have even had their opener.

In yet another weak backpass, the on-loan ace turned over possession of the ball to West Ham and allowed them to capitalise on another defensive error.

There have been plenty of rumours going around regarding the future of Lopetegui with the club even giving him a three-game ultimatum to decide his future [GiveMeSport, 24 September].

However, since then it has emerged that his future is secure with the Spaniard having the “full support” [The Athletic, 5 October] of the West Ham board.

Lopetegui will no doubt be hoping that things can turn around following their win against the Tractor Boys and will perhaps look for his team to use the momentum gained from the win in their upcoming fixture against Tottenham on 19 October.
