BBC Sport pundit furious at West Ham United as David Moyes sack edges closer
Shay Given has blasted West Ham United for their treatment of David Moyes as speculation mounts about his future as manager of the club.
The Scot is expected to leave the club at the end of the season, with reports suggesting the Hammers are close to appointing Julen Lopetegui as his replacement despite no official statement yet.
And while appearing on Football Focus (4 May), former Newcastle goalkeeper Given was furious about the situation and claimed the 61-year-old “deserves more”.
“I don’t like it, I don’t have a good feeling about it at all,” he said.
“I feel sorry for David Moyes, in terms I feel that something more professional should have come from the very top. I know him and the sporting director maybe don’t see eye to eye but at the same time, David Moyes brought the first trophy to West Ham in forty years.
“The least they could say is that they’ve spoken about the situation. It’s like David’s in one office and they’re interviewing another manager in the office next door.
“It’s a real mess. And I think with the career he’s had and the success he’s brought West Ham he deserves more.”
West Ham will be around after David Moyes
Yes, Moyes has done terrific things at the London Stadium and deserves plenty of praise for what he has done during his years in charge.
But it’s being forgotten that he also has failed to commit his future to the club one way or another, with talks scheduled for the end of the season, and it means that West Ham have to make plans.
Obviously, if the club intended to keep him around then deals wouldn’t be getting so advanced at this stage. But also they have to have plans in place because if Moyes isn’t going to be here, then this process needs to take place anyway.
If they waited until the end of the season to start this process then most people would be complaining at how poorly prepared they are for the scenario, and a slow start next season would be blamed on it.
Ultimately the Hammers will be around long after Moyes, regardless of whether that’s this summer or in years to come, so they have to be prepared. It’s not ideal, sure, but it’s necessary at this point.
In other West Ham news, Chris Sutton has tipped another Moyes return in 2024/25 if he is sacked this summer.
